One Another
INTRODUCTION: God first loved us, and it is as we learn to love God that we learn to love one another. It is the very nature of God that we start to imitate as we interact with Him. It is not merely to love one another; it is that our ability to love one another is rooted in the fact that God first loved us. He is the key that enables us to do the impossible.

  1. 1. The first chapel is the introduction of the theme and the speaker. The purpose is to set the foundation for the week
    1. Theme verse: 1 John 4:11 “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
    2. Used 56 times in the Bible, The One Another’s are not just words, obligations or tasks but who we become when we follow Jesus.
  2. God loves us: 1 John 4:7-11
    1. God’s love for us is everlasting.

Old testament foundation of God’s love example:
Jeremiah 31:3 “The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness and Jeremiah 31:33-34 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be my people.”

  1. When we understand that love, we begin to love Him.
  2. Application: God’s love for us is complete and perfect. His love sets everything else in motion, including His plan for salvation. His desire is for our love back.
  1. God commands us to love one another
    1. 1 John 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
    2. Old testament foundation or God’s command: Deuteronomy 6:4  “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”
    3. Followed by Matthew 22:37 “Jesus replied:“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”
    4. Application: This is not just a suggestion; God commands us to do this.

*Combine two and three for third and fourth-grade camp.

  1. We are to have fellowship with one another
    1. 1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”
    2. Foundation of Old testament or God’s example: Genesis 1:26 “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and overall the creatures that move along the ground.” Us and our in this verse are generally believed to be God the Father, Spirit, and Son. This is the foundation of fellowship. The trinity in perfect unity and fellowship.
    3. Application: What is Christian fellowship for mankind, and why is it essential to spiritual growth?
  2. We are to be kind to one another
    1. Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
    2. Old testament foundation or God’s example: Psalm 86:15 “But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”
    3. Kindness is not explained well as a general rule. As a Christian, there is more to kindness than just something you say or an act you do. Kindness is something we are called to become. When we are tenderhearted and forgiving, we become kind and compassionate people.
    4. Application: We are to be people who are kind to others because of Christ's work in us.

    1. Colossians 3:12-17 “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all of these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing songs & hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
    2. Old testament foundation: Psalm 51 – We are all sinners in need of forgiveness. It is in that understanding that we truly begin to understand God’s grace.
    3. Application: God calls us to be patient with one another and realize that we all need to become people who forgive each other not because others deserve it, but because God forgave us. (We imitate God’s work on the cross as we imitate Him)

    1. Romans 15:1-7
    2. Old testament foundation: Psalm 133 “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.
    3. Application: think of the music at the chapel, harmony is not playing the same notes but complimentary notes that exist well together to glorify God.

High School

  1.  We are to confess our sins to one another and pray for one another
    1. Be very careful here – confession happens when you know you have committed transgressions that are harming your relationship with God. Confession, in this instance, is not for salvation but to restore your relationship with God. When you confess to one another you are seeking prayer from another Christian for help in overcoming the sin, not just to tell someone about it – this is not a corporate activity. Confession, in this case, is also a desire to repent of that sin, not to glorify it.
    2. James 5:16 “ Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
    3. Old testament foundation Psalm 32 “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.  Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.  When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord. And you forgave
the guilt of my sin. Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
while you may be found, surely the rising of the mighty waters
will not reach them. You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; II will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you. Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him.  Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!”
    4. Application: Finding someone who is a life stage ahead of you to pray for you to overcome something you desire to change with God's help.

  1. We are to bear and forgive one another
    1. Colossians 3:12-17
    2. Old testament foundation for forgiveness: Exodus 34:6-7a. “And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion, and sin.”
    3. Application: God calls us to be patient with one another and realize that we all need to become people who forgive each other not because others deserve it, but because God forgave us.
