2018 Stand Firm Curriculum

ARMOR OF GOD
EPHESIANS 6:10-20

STAND FIRM.
Introduction to the topic

  • Paul wrote Ephesians to the church at Ephesus to encourage and build up anyone who could hear.
  • “Finally” – what does this mean?
  • Find our strength in God, not ourselves.
  • Emphasis on how we are called to put on the “full” armor of God- not just part of it

STAND – vs. 10-13

  • Standing through the battle requires bravery, persistence, and perseverance.
  • Who is the battle against?
  • “Stand” is mentioned three times. Why?
    • 2 Corinthians 4:7-9, James 4:7-8

BELT OF TRUTH – vs. 14

  • The piece of armor that holds together the rest of the armor. Satan is the master at telling lies. He is so good at spreading lies and falsities that we tend to fall for it. When we believe in Christ we are filled with His truth. It is only Christ’s truth that can defeat Satan’s lies.
    • John 14:6, John 16:13, John 17:17

BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS – vs. 14

  • Our heart holds so many feelings, values, and worth – making it a prime candidate for Satan to attack. God’s breastplate protects our heart.
    • Romans 3:22-26, Ephesians 4:22-24, Psalm 119:172

FEET FITTED WITH THE READINESS – vs. 15

  • If we relied on our own strength to spread the Gospel it would never happen. Satan wants us to believe that there is no hope or point in trying to spread the truth of God – that it is too hard and there will never be a bit of success. God give us the footgear to continue to motivate us to further the Kingdom. He provides us with the opportunities and strength to speak the truth of the Gospel to others.
    • Matthew 28:18-20, Isaiah 52:7

SHIELD OF FAITH – vs. 16

  • Satan will continue to try and destroy us with “fiery arrows” which can come in many different forms – temptations, lies, insults, etc. God provides us with the shield of faith to hold up against all of the arrows from the evil one. Our shield of faith is our trust in God and His ultimate plan.
    • Romans 4:18-21, Mark 11:22-23

HELMET OF SALVATION – vs. 17

  • Salvation – the deliverance from evil.  Where does evil come from inside of us? The mind. Put on the helmet of salvation and the mind of Christ. It protects our thoughts and keeps us Christ-like.
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:8-11, Romans 12:1-2

SWORD OF THE SPIRIT – vs. 17

  • The sword is our only offensive weapon.  When we are being tempted we are to use scripture to fight against temptation, just as Jesus did in the desert.  We must sharpen our sword with continual study of the scriptures. Emphasis on how important scripture memory is. With scripture we can fight against temptation no matter the circumstance.
    • Hebrews 4:12, Matthew 4:1-10, Mark: 14:38, 1 Corinthians 10:13, Hebrews 2:18

PRAYER – vs. 18-20

  • We are called to pray at all times, with all kinds of prayers and requests. We are called to be in constant communication with God. In order to strengthen our relationship with Him we must be talking to him and more importantly, listening. We must also be praying for others. Praying that the Gospel can be made known through our brothers and sisters in Christ.
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Matthew 6:9-13, Matthew 26:36-46, Romans 8:26-27, Romans 12:12, Philippians 4:6-7, Colossians 4:2-4
